What is residency?
Teacher residency is a novel educator preparation model that blends teacher-preparation
coursework with a full academic year classroom internship alongside a high-quality
mentor teacher. Within their placement classrooms, teacher residents immediately observe
and practice the concepts and skills they are learning in their coursework. This immersive
approach provides them with a gradual introduction to increasing responsibilities
within the classroom. Most importantly, teacher residents get to experience the full
187-day school year, giving them extensive preparation to be successful in classrooms
of their own.
What is apprenticeship?
Teacher apprenticeship provides opportunities for teacher assistants employed in Mississippi school districts to obtain their bachelor's degree along with their Mississippi educator’s license. On-the-job training from experienced teachers is paired with related instruction from ’s Teacher Assistant Pathway to prepare these future educators for classrooms of their own. This “earn while you learn” model provides school districts a chance to grow their teaching workforce from within while expanding employment opportunities for existing employees. Teacher apprentices are immersed in the climate and culture of their district and school while growing their content and pedagogical skills.

“The ability for a senior education major to spend 187 teacher days at a school and see every component of a school year is priceless! The combination of pedagogy through college work along with the practitioner component is definitely a win-win for the University, the students and our school district. We are thankful that partnered with us for their undergraduate residency program three years ago, and I am happy to report that we have many residency students who are now employed and thriving in our district.”
